Why this petition matters

Started by Mike Flynn

This petition is meant to be an outlet for people who oppose the bike lane proposal for Boulevard East in Weehawken, Guttenberg, West New York, and North Bergen.

We all know pro-bike people to be very vocal and motivated, which is an admirable trait.

We who oppose this plan need to be equally organized and vocal.

This petition is not anti-bike.  It is pro common sense.

The plan calls for a dedicated bike lane which would be installed on the east side of the street running north and south from the Lincoln Tunnel to James Braddock Park approximately 4 miles long.

This plan will eliminate more than 275 parking spots from the east side of the street.  It will create higher traffic and danger for all those who already travel this roadway by car and bus.

It will increase congestion and competition for already limited parking.  Ultimately this will increase driver frustration and aggression resulting in a more dangerous situation.

We cannot appease the few bikers at the expense of the majority who will be negatively impacted by such a foolish endeavor.

If we could go back in time and start over, yes bike lanes would be a great idea.

The problem is the streets are already there. We are working within the constraints of the width of the street which is limited by a 100-foot sheer cliff. You cannot put in bike lanes without losing parking spaces in an already difficult-to-park neighborhood.  We are not like Hoboken and Jersey City with the countless forms of transportation to choose from. We have one main road and two forms of transport. Cars and Buses. Both of which would be negatively impacted by the addition of bikes and bike lanes. I don't see the benefit of encouraging increased interactions of bikes with the cars and buses on an already congested roadway. I certainly don't see the benefit of removing parking spaces in order to do so. Considering people bought their homes based on the way things are and the current level of available street parking, it would be unfair to make such a drastic change that would negatively affect the residents of these neighborhoods.

Public projects such as this should benefit the majority, not the small yet loud minority.

If you agree with the above I ask you to sign this petition and also encourage you to write your town and county(Boulevard East is a county road) representatives to express your opposition to this plan.  Your voice needs to be just as loud as the Pro Bike Community who want to ruin your neighborhood and quality of life with another poorly thought-through plan.
