OPEN LETTER TO NOAM CHOMSKY – PLEASE, DON’T ENDORSE MEXICAN PRESIDENT LÓPEZ OBRADOR MILITARISTIC RIGHT-WING GOVERNMENT BY ACCEPTING HIS INVITATION TO THE INDEPENDENCE CEREMONY (ESPAÑOL ABAJO)

WE RESPECTFULLY ASK YOU TO DECLINE! PUBLICLY! 

 

We the undersigned, progressive individuals, and independent collectives both from Mexico and the US, are asking you to refrain yourself from endorsing the military, neoliberal, and anti-Zapatista Mexican current administration by accepting Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s invitation to the Mexican Independence ceremony this September 15 and 16. 

 

Your acceptance adds a lot of confusion in the international arena. For Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) President of Mexico, that’s all about, since the international media keep calling him “leftist.” We wonder, though, why would a man attend an event honoring him? Some reasons for this potential guest to accept include that the man was a secret member of a narco-cartel, or the CEO of beverage giant Refreco, or a charlatan politician claiming to be a leftist who is nothing more than a neoliberal. 

But, you are none of these, Noam. So, we wonder why you haven't publicly declined your invitation to attend the “El Grito” and published a refutation of AMLO's politics, beginning with his move to make the National Guard and corrupt, organized-crime-serving MX Army one entity, and ending with his actions to turn the Mexican army into the true US border patrol.

The list of criticisms you could make is long. They include the business initiatives that benefit casino and corporation owners and their interests (including cartels’ interests) by categorizing them as "national security" issues, thus avoiding debate and stigmatizing all the honest, brave critics of such an alarming action as “conservatives.”  This would be funny if it weren’t a tragedy, because AMLO's reverence for Donald Trump is well known. He emulates Trump by relentlessly attacking the press even as Mexico registered the most murder of journalists last year in its history – and that’s a lot saying. You may learn here about the assassination of Indigenous environmentalist leader and journalist Samir Flores with English subtitles, if you still don’t know the case. If not that, surely some of AMLO's public praise of Trump could be cited in your reasons for rejecting to "honor" them both.

We had a lot of respect for the man who once said that. We are wondering who you are these days.

 

CARTA ABIERTA A NOAM CHOMSKY: POR FAVOR, NO AVALES CON TU PRESENCIA AL GOBIERNO MILITARISTA DERECHISTA DEL PRESIDENTE MEXICANO LÓPEZ OBRADOR ACEPTANDO SU INVITACIÓN A LA CEREMONIA DEL GRITO DE INDEPENDENCIA. CON TODO RESPETO, TE PEDIMOS QUE DECLINES… ¡PUBLICAMENTE!

Nosotras y nosotros, los abajo firmantes, individuos y colectivos independientes o autónomos de México y EEUU, te escribimos esta carta para pedirte que evites respaldar con tu presencia al actual gobierno militarista, neoliberal y antizapatista de Andrés Manuel López Obrador, aceptando su invitación a la ceremonia del Grito de Independencia, los días 15 y 16 de septiembre. 

Tu aceptación suma mucha confusión en el ámbito internacional. Para Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), presidente de México, de eso se trata, ya que la prensa internacional lo sigue llamando “izquierdista”. De todas formas, cabe preguntarnos, ¿por qué un hombre asistiría a un evento en su honor? Algunas de las razones pueden ser que ese invitado de AMLO sea un miembro secreto de un narco-cartel, o el CEO del gigante de las bebidas Refreco, o un político charlatán que decía ser de izquierda y que no es más que un neoliberal.  

Pero tú no eres ninguno de estos, Noam. Entonces, nos preguntamos por qué no has rechazado públicamente su invitación para asistir al “Grito” y no has publicado una refutación de la política de AMLO, comenzando con su movimiento para hacer de la Guardia Nacional y el Ejército al servicio del narcotráfico una sola entidad, y terminando con sus medidas para convertir el ejército mexicano en la verdadera patrulla fronteriza estadounidense.

La lista de críticas se podrías hacer es larga. Incluyen las iniciativas comerciales que benefician a los propietarios de casinos y corporaciones y sus intereses (también los intereses de los cárteles) al categorizarlos como asuntos de "seguridad nacional", evitando así el debate y estigmatizando a todos los honestos y valientes críticos de tan alarmante medida como "conservadores". Esto sería gracioso si no resultara una tragedia, porque es bien conocida la reverencia de AMLO por Donald Trump. Emula a Trump atacando implacablemente a la prensa incluso cuando, el año pasado, México registró la mayor cantidad de asesinatos impunes a periodistas en su historia… y eso es mucho decir, aquí puedes ver la historia del comunicador líder indígena Samir Flores con subtítulos en inglés, si todavía no la conoces. Si no eso, seguramente algunos de los elogios públicos de AMLO a Trump podrían citarse en tus razones para rechazar "honrar" a ambos.
