The Engineering profession has not reached gender parity despite over 25 years of significant efforts to encourage women to consider studying engineering and pursue engineering careers after graduation. While numbers of graduates are higher than 30 years ago, retention of women in engineering is our professions biggest challenge. While STEM programs should continue to encourage women to consider engineering as a field of study (there are many science outreach organizations doing this well, perhaps too many) there must also be balanced efforts to support women once they are in their engineering career. Otherwise, it is like trying to fill a bucket that has a giant hole in it. The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers Mentorship Program is an example of anew effective program that helps support women who are working in engineering..... or patching that hole in the bucket. It is critical that the OSPE Women in Engineering Mentorship program continue to be funded as it is a cost effective method to retain and reach gender parity in the Engineering Profession.
