According to local news reports stunt driving has reached "historic levels", seeing a 600% increase since last year. COVID 19 has led to less traffic on the roads however the numbers of those charged with stunt driving has skyrocketed. This kind of driving is nothing new however. Police Officers know that for every car they have stopped for this kind of driving there are many more that they couldn't stop because it was just too dangerous to do so. It was too dangerous to attempt to identify the driver, therefore no charge. The driver's know this as well and they know that if they drive more dangerously, faster, and reckless that police will abandon the stop. The driver's also know that even if the police have their plate and can identify the vehicle, that if they can't identify the driver behind the tinted windows there will be no charge. People are dying on the streets and highways because of this reckless and dangerous  driving.

​Legislation has been passed to amend the HTA for photo radar and red light cameras so that the owner of offending vehicles will be fined for violations. Most police cars and many privately owned vehicles are equipped with dash cams.  The Ontario government should amend the HTA so that owners of vehicles can be fined and the vehicles impounded where there is evidence that the vehicle was involved in dangerous and/ or stunt driving.  This would give police an option to pursue charges where it is not safe to stop a vehicle to identify the driver.  I believe that this would help curb the dangerous problem we now face with stunt driving.  It would improve safety for everyone on the road, the innocent drivers of other vehicles, the drivers and passengers of the offending vehicles that are sometimes injured or killed,  the police officers that are trying to stop these vehicles.
