Francesca Kayla started this petition to Ontario Ministry of Education

Hello, our names are Francesca and Kayla and we are Early Childhood Education students on our last semester. With our field placement experience and courses we have seen and learnt about affordable quality child care, what it currently looks like in our centres and the change that needs to be done. We have created this petition to bring awareness to affordable quality child care in Ontario.

Affordable quality child care needs are on the rise. Yet we find ourselves with high child care rates and low salaries. In Ontario child care can cost just as much as rent for families with children under the age of 3 paying on average $1,200 to $2,000 a month and $1,500 for families with preschoolers. 70 – 76% of mothers in Ontario depending on the child’s age are or would like to enter the workforce, yet research shows that 80% of families still cannot afford child care.

If we look at registered early child educators (RECEs) who are working in child care, as of 2017 16% were earning less than $15 an hour and 45% were earning between $15 – $20 per hour.

Now let's look at families who are eligible for child care subsidy. Families with two children under the age of 18 are entitled to a maximum subsidy if their monthly income is less than $1,740. Families with three children under the age of 18 qualify if their monthly income is less than $1,840.

Having affordable quality child care available to families would grow the economy, increase woman’s labour force participation, increase children’s well-being as well as reducing financial stress.

With this petition we are hoping to bring awareness to this issue and have actions taken for RECEs and families of Ontario to increase fundings towards affordable quality child care.
