Why this petition matters

Started by Joy Manlapaz

It has been almost 2 years since the Philippines was affected by the COVID-19 virus, and it has not just affected the health of people, but also the lives of the students. Face to face classes were not allowed due to the threat of the virus, and so, students were introduced to online/modular learning. It was manageable at first, until posting yourself online became a task or a requirement.

Today, there is no way that you are not familiar with the online platform TIKTOK or even FACEBOOK. TIKTOK became one of those stress reliever and coping mechanism of some people during the lockdown or the start of the pandemic. Dances and challenges became a trend, and it can be noticed that a lot students or teens can be seen doing them, but this doesn't mean that every student or teen have the courage to post themselves online.

While scrolling through the app, I have seen continuous videos of the same song but different people dancing. It made me think that it might just be a new challenge, and it caught me off guard to find out that they were all from the same school, and that the TIKTOK video was a school requirement. It was all fun and games, but in reality, I could never do such thing. There were people praising them, but of course negative and unpleasant comments cannot be avoided. Some people might think that I am just overreacting, but to be honest, not everyone is courageous enough to face the feedbacks of others. If we look further into the problem, this can be seen as an another form of cyberbullying.

I think it is important to know the opinion of the students first, as they are the ones who will experience the consequences after posting themselves online, and not the teachers or the people who required them to do so. The point of this act or petition is to let the educators take into consideration the feelings and opinions of the students if they are okay with posting themselves online. "Think before you click". The internet is written in pen not in pencil. You can still cover it, but the memory remains.
