I grew up in the small town of Oneonta which is a small town in Alabama and have been a student of Oneonta High School for several years. I am not usually one to spark controversy, but something came to my attention that I never really thought about before, the name of the school; Oneonta Redskins. Yes, you heard that right. Oneonta, and 62 other high schools around the USA, are using this name for their school.

Now, I don't know about you, but I am both embarrassed and saddened by the name of our school. It is disrespectful to Native Americans and their struggle every day. It is simply stupid to ignore the horrible history and persecution that the true founders of our land have faced and the way that we treat them now. They have been silenced for way too long and I want to break the silence. Oneonta not only has an insensitive name, but their mascot is the “Oneonta redskins” (basically a costume of a native American). This is far beyond emotion, its honestly wrong and shouldn't even be a name to start with. Let's fight together to get Oneonta to change their high school name to something that isn't culturally insensitive.
