If they won't, we should....sign in support of safety at all Olympia Schools.

0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!

My name is Amber Lessen, I am a 2003 graduate of Olympia High School and now I am mother of two daughters who both attend school in the same district. We are living in a world where we are now forced to be fearful that dropping our children off at the school doors could possibly be the last time we see them. We live in fear that the place they go to learn, to thrive, to mature and to be educated, could be the place where they lose their lives.

There is so much talk in the media about how guns are the problem or mental health or video games are the problem, but if we are being real, those are just the tip of the iceberg. Our society IS the problem. Parenting IS the problem. Media IS the problem. It's a culmination of all of these things. The point is, despite the tragedies, despite the fear, despite the political arguments, despite everything....nothing is being done. No one action is going to solve the problem, but sometimes big problems need immediate, important action. I'll be honest in saying I don't know completely what it will take to get this done, but I do know that I am tired of sitting back, reading the news, being devastated over the videos and articles of more children, more educators being killed. If the least we can do is protect our children, our teachers, here in our district, in our schools, then maybe that can be the first steps to real change, maybe then other schools and districts will follow suit. Let's not sit back and be sad, let's be proactive, let's be fearful and angry enough that we are not going to let this happen here. We can't sit back and wait for the country to make a decision of action, let us be a community joined together, taking action into our own hands to protect our children.

So if you agree, please join me in signing this petition for AT LEAST metal detectors in all of our Olympia CUSD 16 schools. There is so much more we could do, but let this be the beginning.

Thank you.
