Rohan Wedge started this petition to Olney Town Council

In Decembers 2020 OTC meeting, it was confirmed that the Council are considering a change of use of the Near Town Allotment Field to be used as more football training pitches. The proposal is to add two junior training pitches on this site, meaning it would be part pitches, part orchard and part wild pasture.

We feel that this is a retrograde step, as after the town council declared a Climate emergency a couple of years ago, and with its blessing, a small group of locals and conservationists worked on a plan to establish of a wild flower meadow in this very same field.

Last year was the first year that this field was left unmown apart from a network of paths left for locals to walk through. It was a considerable success with nearly 80 different species of grasses and other wildflowers establishing themselves as well as providing a place for local people to wander and enjoy being closer to nature.

Not only are there huge environmental benefits to the OTC leaving this field as a wild meadow, such as reducing Olney’s carbon emissions, flood management, supporting local wildlife and educating our younger generations in climate change, the field is currently used by large numbers of people during lockdown. It is an especially valuable resource for those people who do not play sport and who have less opportunities to be active – particularly older people, disabled people and young families.

The council have argued that as the town increases in size there would be an even greater need for more sports facilities, however we disagree and feel that there is a greater need for near town space to relax and enjoy quiet strolls and feel at one with the wilder side of our environment.

The new meadow was a small step in the direction of fighting climate chaos in our town. It can also be a beautiful asset. We cannot and should not back out after just one year!!!
