OCPS Open Schools Safely

We, as a collective group of Oldham County faculty and staff members, believe our voices need to be heard on the matter of opening schools safely. We fully acknowledge the important role our schools play in supporting our families’ abilities to return to work. It should also be acknowledged that we deeply miss our students and the important work we do in our classrooms. However, the safety of students, staff, and families is paramount during this time. Therefore, we advocate for the following:

  • At this time, it is unsafe to begin the school year as currently planned, given that COVID-19 cases are on the rise. We are putting lives at great risk by opening schools in this manner. In particular, there are serious concerns about class sizes and social distancing guidelines, as well as the measures required to keep everyone safe in a school environment and the many unknowns of the virus itself.
  • NTI, rather than a virtual program, should be the option provided to all students and for all teachers at this time. In March, teachers were given 48-hours to transition our curriculum and instruction to an NTI platform. With more time, we could plan exceptional material for our students, build relationships with them, and continue keeping everyone safe from the threat of COVID-19. Our teacher experts can achieve these goals using remote instruction and office hours, if we are given the opportunity.
  • Moving forward, there should be adequate representation for all decisions at all levels, including: elementary school teachers, middle school teachers, high school teachers, ECS teachers, and classified staff. We must be included at the table, as these decisions directly affect us.

We are dedicated to our students and to our colleagues. We respect this district and want to continue to serve safely and to the best of our ability.
