Do we need another place to buy alcohol on Wells Street?

Residents and business in Old Town are disappointed that the new beautiful building at 1435 N. Wells plans to bring in Garfield's Beverage Warehouse.

Why is this problematic?

More alcohol in the area attracts violent crime

  • The addition of Garfield's Beverage Warehouse would increase odds of residents having to deal with even more crime and more violence.  See research here and here.
  • From the National Alcohol Group research: "Both taverns and off-site outlets were linked to higher rates of homicide, aggravated assault, and robbery."

We already have a problem with bar overflow & public alcohol consumption in the area

  • Residents have noticed an uptick in assaults, property damage, and disorderly conduct due to uncontrolled public consumption, which will only increase if Garfield's moves in.
  • Also: LITTER.
  • Garfield's claims they don't sell alcohol commonly used by "street drinkers, but their beer singles start at $1.29. From the recent hearing, Garfield's owner claims: “Most of the consumers who are street-drinking, the products they’ll be buying are things we aren’t selling or we put a price barrier on because we don’t want that image.”

We already have a ton of options for buying alcohol in the neighborhood.

  • Glunz has been a family-owned business since 1888.
  • Galleria has been an independently-owned mainstay on Wells for over 20 years.
  • Also: Jewel, Walgreens, Foxtrot, Plum... Do we need a liquor "warehouse" in the same neighborhood?

Read the news story from Block Club Chicago and draw your own conclusions.

If you want independent businesses to thrive in our neighborhood and you want to keep Wells St vibrant and safe, please sign!

And please do NOT make any monetary contributions to this petition--they are unnecessary and go directly to change.org.

Thank you!
