The Alice Appleby DeVoe Library is located in an early 19th century home, situated on Main Street in the Old Bridge Historic District of East Brunswick.
The building is identified as a critical element to the fabric of the historic district, but more importantly, it is a critical piece of this neighborhood, which dates to the early Colonial Period of New Jersey, and is situated at the site of a Lenape village, along the banks of the South River.
It was gifted by the Appleby-DeVoe family in 1945 to East Brunswick Township as a public library, but for the past 30 years, the local politicians have focused on suburban development, and scant concern about local history and historic preservation.
IF the DeVoe Library is destroyed, as planned by the local officials, the viability of the Old Bridge Historic District will take a mortal blow, and the heritage of our community, and that of our State and Nation, will be sacrificed for no reason, other than apathy.
