I'm starting this petition in hopes to keep my Backyard chickens that I've grown to love just as anyone loves any pet they have. After much research I started caring for a flock September 24th, 2013. The Breed is a White Faced Black Spanish Bantam [Bantams are smaller chickens] Eventually with more research I decided to try my luck in incubating. I was successful twice with a hatch of 3 out of 4 and 14 out of 15. Obviously I did not keep all these birds. The first 3 I kept and nurtured to the point where I would go outside, they would hop on my arm, follow me around the yard, be held by children, and even cradled like a baby rubbing her belly until she fell asleep. Each of these chickens I've incubated have their own name along with the original flock members I kept.
Above is a link to other peoples testimonies of why they keep backyard Birds. My reasons are exactly the same: Fresh organic eggs, Entertainment, Fertilizer for my growing garden, and bug control. Not all of my chickens lay eggs. Do I discard them like a piece of trash because of that? No. I love each and every single one of them. They all have different personalities and I enjoy going in my backyard in the morning time to feed them and just sit with them especially since all I do is work mostly these days. At 24 I enjoy the surine environment it brings even though some may not see that. Just like gardening is a stress reliever so is having backyard birds. I understand it's not for everyone, but I hope to open more peoples eyes when it comes to Chickens and other backyard Birds.
