Have Owen J. Roberts lower their gym requirement to the state standard
Owen J. Roberts currently requires 2.4 health and gym credits to graduate. Meaning a student would need to take 4 years of gym and 2 semesters of health. This blocks students from furthering their academics by filling that period slot. In addition to having more study halls in a week.
The current state requirement is 1 credit of health + gym
Schools around OJR have already lowered their requirements for the 2022-2023 school year to align with state standards. Both Radnor and Downington have dropped their requirements to 0.5 health and 0.5 gym credits.
If a student wants to fill that period slot and it is taken up by a gym class, they will need to pay $175 (for gym) ($100 for health 1 | $250 for health 2) to take it over the summer. A ridiculous amount of money, that the school is making students pay for a decision that they can and should change. Also, the gym requirement interferes with students who need support services and OJR requires those classes.
OJR school board has listed a plan to lower requirements by removing 1 year of the gym for juniors and 1 year of health. However, the full changes will take effect only for the class of 2026 and after. So, currently, no one at the high school will see the full effect of this plan. This means they will lower the credits by .5 almost double the state requirements and schools around us.
We are being forced to take these extra gym classes when they aren't even aligned with the state standards.
