Why this petition matters

Started by Brandi Bittner

Parkland County OHV bylaw states,

The OHV operator must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid Class 5 operator's license while driving on County roads and in ditches.

Lac Ste Anne County, Yellowhead County, Strathcona County, Leduc County, Westlock County, Barrhead County, just to name a few. All follow Alberta Legislation.

Which states,

The driver of the OHV is at least 14 years of age unless the child is closely supervised by an adult of at least 18 years of age.

As a parent, finding something that kids love to do between the ages of 7-16 is hard. To get them outside, away from the screen, away from social media, away from video games.  By the time they turn 16. If we haven’t already found something that they love to do. Instilling it at that age. Is next to impossible.

OHV riding is a great alternative.  From ages under 13 riding with mom and dad/adult is fun. It gives the parents/guardians the opportunity to teach young kids about OHV safety. At 14 it gets tougher. They are now old enough to drive a motor vehicle and mopeds on public road ways. This is a great new experience for them. All they want to do now is DRIVE. Being behind the wheel with a licensed driver is exciting for a 14 year old. However, they are still craving independents. They want to experience a little freedom. Currently, the way the bylaws is written. They can not ride any OHV anywhere but private property!

Lets see if we can be the change we want to see!
