Why this petition matters

First off we need to start off with the gun situation, it’s so obvious they did not care about us in that moment. During the gun situation they allowed students to go to lunch and have regular class while they did NOT even know where the student with the gun was (students had no idea what was going on). Even though it was a false claim we still went to school the next day as if nothing ever happened. To make it even worse they LIED to parents. They didn’t inform parents about the situation until the school day was over and they were telling parents during the gun situation that “nothing was going on”. I personally went to the office and saw a big line of parents trying to get their kids out but the school instead was arguing to the parents saying they can’t let them out. Police were called but they only stood in one group in the cafeteria they didn’t spread out or try to make students feel safe. A few years ago someone made a call threatening  a school and all the schools in the area went on lock down, but this time when someone claimed to have a gun nothing was done. Afterwards the school started being strict with letting students in and out of the school which I understand it is for security reasons but then they started to get way to strict on the wrong things. They said students will get suspended for being off campus(Students go off campus mostly during lunch to grab lunch if we were given the freedom to leave student wouldn’t be as provoked to leave and not come back). We get disciplined for coming through the front entrance without a pass (some people avoid the crowd in the halls by going outside and walking around the building and they come in through the front doors). We would get suspended for disrespecting a teacher (they act as if we argue with teachers for no reason there is always some thing that made us feel like we needed to defend ourselves or to be “disrespectful”, WE HAVE THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH) we would also get suspended for not eating lunch in the lunch room, they have gates that cover the entrances into the lunch room that they close so people can not come into or to leave the lunch room, I think it looks like a prison and it doesn’t look like a place that parents would send their children to learn and be taken care of (some students can’t handle the lunch room because it’s too overwhelming so instead they stay in their classroom to eat lunch) I don’t understand why we are being punished. They are taking advantage of the words suspension and discipline and throwing them in every little thing wrong with what student are doing. Instead of training teachers to deal with students not getting to class in time they should be training them to learn some self defense or something more than just having us hide and them shushing us during a lock down. Next, They give us 5 minutes to transition to our next class but if you are coming from the other building(JLC) it takes 6 minutes to come from JLC to get to a class upstairs but those 6 minutes don’t even include the traffic in the halls which can add another minute, If you are late to class they send you to In School Detention. There is a lot more I have to say about the rules in school and with this they continue to question why we rebel, these rules deprive kids of the opportunity to internalize self-discipline and responsibility and we need to do something about it.
