Why this petition matters

Started by Haley Sammons

At the moment, OHS class of 2022 are being told they will not be allowed to decorate their graduation caps. Decorating graduation caps have been a tradition of seniors across the country for years, something many members of our class were looking forward to; and assumed that we would be permitted too, since last years class (2021) was allowed to. We understand the concerns that some caps may be decorated inappropriately; or maybe this has happened in the past. We have come up with multiple solutions to this problem. Our first solution would be to simple say, students will need to have their graduation caps decorated before our ceremony rehearsal and will be checked at the rehearsal, if any students have decorated their caps inappropriately they will not be permitted to walk at the actual ceremony. Another Solution would be to make the rule that you may decorate your cap with the exception of no words. We have worked so hard and looked forward to this day since we walked into our first day of elementary school, and we simply want to add our own little touch to our cap and gowns. We have been taught to be individuals our whole lives. Decorating our caps is perfect way to express individuality, on a day we will all be dressed the exact same. Decorating our caps will help students find their caps after tossing them up at the end of the ceremony, help family and friends locate their graduate in the crowd, and promote individuality. After so many years of hard work we deserve this! So fellow Graduates, Parents, Family, Friends,  and Whoever this may concern, please sign this petition to show that you support and believe that we are mature enough to handle this priveldge and hopefully change the minds of our administration!
