Melanie Klingler started this petition to Ohlone Board of Trustees

Once again, the Deaf Studies department at Ohlone College is being greatly impacted by recent budget cuts. For many years, the Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP) has been highly regarded nationwide, however the college no longer supports the position for a full time coordinator which is a vital role to interpreter education.

A full time coordinator ensures the quality of education by functioning as the anchor of the program; as the single person who has been there from the very beginning, they are able to monitor students progress, administer appropriate lesson plans, and give well-rounded feedback. Without this, students do not have a designated faculty member to understand their individual needs, nor do they have anyone to hold the responsibility of managing the demands of the IPP.

Students are already experiencing a cutback due the lack of the prerequisite classes needed for acceptance, and arguably will need more support upon arrival. Ohlone College’s decision to eliminate this position stunts an already hindered department and risks the integrity of a program that has produced skilled and culturally sound interpreters for the past several decades.

Please sign this petition to support the Deaf community and urge the Board to reconsider their decision!
