Ohioans for Green Energy Now!
Our planet is reeling with the effects of Climate Change while scientists warn that our window to act is perilously small, and that bold, aggressive, action is required on the largest scale if we hope to avert catastrophe. The Ohio General Assembly, however, fresh off the Senate Bill 6 scandal, has decided that the best course of action for moving from coal and other fossil fuels to renewable sources of electrical generation in Ohio is to leave it to County Commissioners.
Senate Bill 52, passed and signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine in July, 2021, not only mandates restrictive setback requirements for any new proposed solar and wind farms, it allows County Commissions to veto them up front, preemptively nullifying the careful and less political process used by the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) since 1985. Future development of wind and solar generating projects will almost certainly be nonexistent.
HOWEVER, the twenty solar projects and one wind project already in the pipeline with the OPSB are exempt from this threat, hence the reason for this petition. The Kingwood Solar Project (Case No. 21-0117-EL-BGN) faces opposition from a small but well organized citizens group who are "not opposed to solar energy," but don't want it in their backyard. The OPSB will be deciding the fate of the Kingwood Project along with the others over the coming year or so, and it is time to stand up for clean energy in Ohio!
This petition gives Ohioans who believe that immediate steps must be taken on all fronts to combat climate change an opportunity to make their voices heard by the OPSB. If you support Ohio doing its part to reduce greenhouse gases by moving to cleaner energy, please sign!
