Black Men of the Future started this petition to Ohio Wesleyan University

The OWU administration has decided to combine the Black World Studies program and Gender Studies program into a department labeled "Critical Identity Studies." These two departments are entirely different in what they teach and the prospect that either will be represented fully is worrisome especially for the BWS department.  Black students at OWU learn their history from the African American History classes offered in BWS. This is important because the real history of the African diaspora is hard for many people to learn. Due to American schools teaching a white version of history that does not cover the full if any contributions, violence perpetrated against, or the systems in place that have constantly kept down African Americans.  This makes it difficult for descendants of the victims of the transatlantic slave trade to learn their history. It is unclear how this "Critical Identity Studies" department will function as a black space but based on conversations had with faculty in the department it is worrisome. When you take OWU's past history into account; fighting for a BWS department in the first place (which was never given), Having the House of Black Culture be in a decrepit state, Deciding to to tear the House of black culture down with no replacement in place and only deciding to rebuild it due to bad publicity. This campus uses black students to advertise itself as a beacon of equality and liberal arts. Behind the scenes nothing could be further from the truth. Everything black students have had on campus we have had to fight for. Even in the conversation to merge the BWS and Gender Studies programs there was not a single person of color in the room. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Tell OWU you are not satisfied with the way they treat their students of color. Sign the petition!
