RaeAnn Ensworth started this petition to Ohio University Student Senate Judicial Panel

On June 28, 2020, multiple brave survivors took to social media to share their experiences with Carlo DeNiro. In the aftermath of these allegations coming to light, Ohio University Sorority and Fraternity Life and the Inter-Fraternity Council took immediate action and removed DeNiro from his position of IFC President.

Students then became aware that DeNiro was the only remaining candidate for Student Senate President. This position is not only the highest possible position of power for undergraduate students, it also comes with a full scholarship. Students began to call on Student Senate and the Student Senate Judicial Panel to remove DeNiro from the ticket immediately.

On July 1, 2020, at 10:40 p.m., Student Senate Judicial Panel released a statement claiming they were powerless to remove DeNiro from the ballot. They stated that because the accusations against DeNiro had not gone through the school there was no evidence to remove him from the ballot. In their statement they say they believe and support survivors on campus. However, they are actively choosing to ignore survivors who bravely told their story.

The Judicial Panel has the sole authority to remove DeNiro from the ballot and to re-open applications so that a suitable ticket may run. We, the students, faculty and alumni of Ohio University are calling on JP to adapt the rules and procedures to meet the needs of survivors on campus. Remove DeNiro from the ballot, open up the applications, and prove that you care about survivors on campus.
