Ohio: Time to Act F.A.S.T. on Stroke Care

With stroke, time is critical. When a stroke occurs, we must act fast to recognize the signs and symptoms and take immediate action to prevent long-term disability or death.

Recently, a new public media campaign --F.A.S.T.-- was unveiled to help spread knowledge about the signs and symptoms of stroke. F.A.S.T. stands for Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty and Time to call 911. As with acting F.A.S.T. to recognize a stroke and take action, we also need to act fast to improve stroke care in Ohio! With the new legislative session beginning, now is the time for a renewed effort to improve stroke care.

We have the ability to reduce long-term disability, save healthcare costs and save lives...but only if we act FAST. Please send your message now!

With stroke, time is critical. When a stroke occurs, we must act fast to recognize the signs and symptoms and take quick action to prevent long-term disability or death.

Recently, experts gathered for the International Stroke Conference 2013 and unveiled the new public media campaign--F.A.S.T.-- designed to help spread knowledge about the signs and symptoms of stroke. F.A.S.T. stands for Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty and Time to call 911.

As an Ohio lawmaker, you can also act fast to help stroke victims. Last year, Representative (now Senator) Gardner and Representative Boyd introduced HB 427. While that bill didn't become a law, now is the time for a renewed effort to address stroke care. We have the ability to reduce disability, save healthcare costs and save lives...but only if we act FAST.

I urge you to support similar stroke legislation that would recognize primary stroke centers and develop a registry for ongoing assessment of the system. If you are interested in supporting this legislation, please contact Cresha Auck Foley at cresha.auck@heart.org for additional details.

The recent International Stroke Conference was a great reminder of what we need to know in our personal lives and what we can do to improve outcomes for Ohio's stroke victims. Thank you for your FAST action!
