Clayton Stamper started this petition to Ohio State Senate and

Columbus, Ohio should be renamed "Tecumseh, Ohio" in honor of the Native American leader who struggled for freedom against colonial expansion during the early years of the United States.

Christopher Columbus is no role model. He committed numerous human atrocities not limited to slave trading, torture, rape, and genocide.  He is touted for "discovering" the Americas, although he was by no means the first foreigner to land on these shores. The native populations certainly were in no need of discovery in the first place having lived peacefully and free from foreign terror for millennia. Christopher Columbus should be viewed as one of the most vile terrorists in recorded history. Despite his horrendous acts, his legacy has largely been celebrated for having helped bring about the culmination of the European Renaissance through exchange of cultural ideas as well as trading of new resources both to and from the New World. History is rarely as neat and tidy as it is taught to us in grade school and Christopher Columbus is perhaps one of the most glaring examples of educational failure. He may have "sailed the ocean blue" in 1492, but it was stained blood red in his wake.

Accordingly, it is no surprise then that many states and municipalities have swapped Columbus Day for Indigenous Peoples' Day. Beyond a single holiday, it is obvious that Christopher Columbus does not represent what our great state stands for. Furthermore, he holds no specific reference to anything related to Ohio. The name for our state capital was chosen by a state lawmaker and local residents who admired Christopher Columbus for some unknown reason. They then persuaded other lawmakers and the city was named Columbus in 1812. Even if they were ignorant to Columbus' troubling past, the choice of name was by no means a creative one. There was however a native son of Ohio who was a man of great honor and courage - one truly deserving of bearing our capital's name.

Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief, warrior, and prophet who was born on the land that would one day be named Ohio. Through his skilled diplomacy, he created a huge conglomerate of Native tribes in their struggle for independence against American and British colonists in the early 1800s. His quest ultimately failed, but he fought to his death to keep his people's ancestral homeland in Ohio.

We believe Tecumseh exhibits the proud traits of a Buckeye, and indeed he was born as one of its true native sons as a member of the Shawnee tribe. We should be honored to carry on the legacy of such a strong Ohioan! Diplomacy, determination, and willpower "which death alone can still." THAT is our heritage. THAT is our legacy!

Let's name our capital city after someone we can be proud of! Let's become Tecumseh, Ohio!
