Why this petition matters

Started by Eric Estrada

On the morning of May 26th 2020, 22 yr old Eric J. Estrada II was driving himself to work as any other day. At approximately 9:04am EST, Eric was hit head on by an 87 yr old man, who went left of center attempting to pass a car, and tractor trailer in a no passing zone. The elderly man was driving an estimated speed of 80-90mph according to witnesses at the scene. Both Eric and the elderly man died as a result of the crash. Eric is my son and died in a senseless accident. Myself along with many others have asked the questions, “What was this elderly man driving that fast for? Why would he chose to attempt to pass 2 vehicles in a no passing zone? What was this man thinking?”. Unfortunately, we will never have our questions answered. It’s no secret that as we age, most individuals will enter a state of cognitive decline, and or impairment. In other words, we begin to become physically and mentally impaired. Alcohol, and drugs have the same diminishing effects on our mental, and physical abilities, therefore driving under the influence is dangerous, and against the law. I would like to have support for laws that require elderly drivers to take road tests every few years, to prove they are capable of operating a motor vehicle safely. Driving is a privilege, not a right. I ask for your support so that maybe another parent, spouse, child, sibling, family member, or friend, can possibly be spared from the pain Eric’s family and friends feel everyday.
