Marquis Wise started this petition to Ohio State House Janine Boyd / Ohio State Senate Sandra Williams

Under the law, a Mother's right to custody differ depending on her marital status at the time of the childs birth.  Rather, the court automatically considers an unmarried mother to be the sole residential parent and legal guardian of all children unless there is mitigating circumstances.

In Ohio, if a child is born to an unmarried woman, she is considered by law to be the sole custodial Parent.  A Father has no rights until he establishes paternity and obtains a Court Order granting him custody, shared parenting, or parenting time.

We the people are proposing to our Ohio State Legislature to amend our currents custody laws from sole custodial custody to Legal Joint Custody from the childs date of birth.

Joint Legal Custody (also called shared legal custody, shared parental responsibilities is when parents share that authority of their child.

Unfortunately, our children are falling to the wayside by the hundreds in Ohio and our current laws is prohibiting our Fathers from intervening.  Do to the current laws governing our children combined with the average age of our young having children is devistating.  Lacking parental authority as Fathers play a major role in the disfunction of our children, the trauma our children is experiencing at such a young age, and the limited support our children receive during their growth process is heart breaking.

Giving Fathers rights at the onset of a childs life is proven to enhance the child/childrens growth and development in all areas.  Children are more likely to excel in their academics, their character, and their overall discipline.  Father engagement activities promotes healthier social lives, more creativity, as well as contribute to school readiness through diverse stem exercises.

However, not amending the law from sole custodial parenting to Joint Legal Custody leaves the decision of whether our children have a healthy social life with their Father up to the child/childrens mother's.  The academics of our children will stay below average due to being in a single parent home.  Children are more likely to experience trauma, and they are more likely to have low self esteem.

WIth Joint Legal Custody, both parents will have an opportunity to pursue their individual goals and or careers.  JLC  allows for both parents to schedule their lives to be more active in their childs everyday lives with limited stress.  Most of all, it builds confidence in our children at a very young age.  It is essential for the development our the child/children to have both parents to love, nourish, and nurture them from birth.

However, we would like to thank you in advance for the opportunity to express our concerns collectively as we await a response from you, the law makers.

Thank you.

Marquis Wise.
