shamecka Nelson started this petition to Ohio Parole Board - Department of Rehabilitaion & Correction

On December 21, 2020, a majority of the Parole Board Members voted 6-0 that Walter was suitable for release on parole.

After two months, someone contested the release and petitioned for a Full Board Hearing. Their petition was granted and a Full Board Hearing was scheduled for April 21, 2021 to determine if the December 21st decision will be upheld or rescinded.

This petition is to encourage the majority of the 10 member parole board to release Walter at the conclusion of that hearing.

On February 10th, 1994 three months after his 16th birthday, Walter Glen Atwood was arrested for two robberies in Oberlin, Ohio. After 10 months of court proceedings, Walter reluctantly plead guilty to all charges and was sentenced to 23-65 years for attempted murder, complicity to attempted rape, aggravated robbery and felonious assault.

Today on March 5th, 2021 Walter is still serving time for a crime he committed 27 years ago. Prior to the two robberies, Walter had never been in trouble with the law.

Over the years, Walter has not only acknowledge his actions within the crime he committed but he has also expressed remorse for the store clerk who was seriously injured during the robbery. On January 14th, 2017 Walter expressed in his letter to Governor Kasich the following:

"I cannot express the remorse and regret I have for inflicting pain, discomfort and trauma upon Mrs. _______, her family and the community. Every day I lie with the realization that I nearly took Mrs. _______ life. There was a time when it use to haunt me, but I utilized that torment and directed it to become a man who is determined to help instead of hurt, build instead of destroy and love instead of hate. There is no way to repay the debt I have incurred, but I am constantly putting forth effort to do as much good in this world as possible."

Prior to passing away on January 24th, 2020, Walter’s victim spoke in favor of his release at his 2nd to last Parole hearing.

During his 27 years of incarceration, Walter has enrolled himself in numerous programs and college classes that has helped him to become a positive mentor for several young men who entered reintegration. Walter served as Founder, Vice-President,  Co-Facilitator, Chairman and President of several programs including but not limited to TOPUCU (The Only Person You Cheat is You), World Cultural Organization, American Red Cross Lorain Co. Chapter, Therapeutic Community, R.A.M. and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Mr. Atwood has also taken  business courses at both Ashland University and Kent State University.

"Growing up in prison has not been easy, but I have managed to persevere and grow into a resilience that allows me to process experiences with clear perception. The greatest realization of my life has come through self-study. My faith in God's Divinity assures me that every situation is purposeful. With this understanding, I have been able to accept  reality and grow from my circumstances." - Walter Glenn Atwood

The 16 year old delinquent who committed a heinous crime has transition himself into becoming a 43 year old man who is dedicated to learning, growing and being of aid to others.

On the behalf of Walter, we are asking that you join us in petitioning for Walter Glen Atwood's release from prison.

By signing this petition you are willingly welcome the release of Walter Atwood into society. You support the process of his successful transition.
