Angelia Evans started this petition to Ohio Governor and

Do you know how hot it gets in the summers here in Ohio where I live or other states?  Do you know that with just a expensive fan that cost an inmate $20.00 to purchase (that most can't afford when they have no income) that it just pushes around hot air only?  Our bodies try to cool themselves off by sweating but if you are taking medication or are obese or have certain health conditions this is not an option.  Our loved ones in prisons are suffering and even dying because there is no air condtioning.  On certain days in the summer temperatures can be well over 100 degrees outside, factor in the humidity as well, even hotter. Imagine being locked in a small cell where temperatures can reach over 150 degrees.  There temperatures are not checked or regulated. I personally have a loved one at Grafton Correctional Institiute in Grafton, Ohio and it breaks my heart that he can not get his body temperature down.  It's dangerous!  They should not be suffering like this.  This particular facility also has 415 staff members, of which some of them have to be out in the heat as well as correctional officers.  There officers are at risk not only from the heat with just a fan circulating hot air but also the fans are loud, that impares the ability to hear radios and cries for help as well as potentional threats. There are 1619 inmates in the Grafton facility as of 7/1/19 and the facility was opened in 1988.  They have air conditioning in certain areas, why not bring it to the rest of the areas also?  If it's just because of cost, then I will do fundraisers or whatever is needed to get the funds to make this happen.  This whole summer I have cried every single night and prayed that nothing heat related happened to someone in prison, and of course my loved one I worried myself sick. If you have loved ones in prisons you already know what these temperatures do to their bodies.  I want to not only make a difference for my loved one but also for anyone else's loved ones suffering as well.  Temperatures in Prisons and Jails matter.  Exposure to high heat alone can lead to increases in aggression, suicide, poor cognitive functioning, and overall poor mental health. Over 20 percent of people incarcerated in U.S. prisons have a mental illness, and an aging prison population means that many individuals are suffering from medical conditions like high blood pressure. Psychotropic drugs and high blood pressure medications can both disrupt the body's ability to regulate heat and cool itself down—meaning that many people in prison face higher risk of overheating.  Air conditioning should not be considered a privilege or amenity, but rather a human right. States and counties that deny air conditioning to incarcerated people should understand that, far from withholding a “luxury,” they are subjecting people to cruel and unusual punishments, and even handing out death sentences.  I am doing this petition to get word out to the state and anyone who can help make this happen.  Thankfully the summer is about to come to a close but some inmates have many more summers ahead.  Some inmates are only in for a few years for mistakes they regret, some are wrongfully in.  If you have ever made a mistake in your life you know they are already paying the price by being in prison with the food, the lack of health care, the hard beds just to name a few things, now they are dying because of heat also.  Something so easy that we can prevent just by making the entire prison air condtioned not just the offices of some higher up staff members.  Please help me and my loved one and sign this petition.  I want them to see that we are all supportive of our loved ones no matter what choices landed them behind bars they don't deserve to die from something that can be helped and fixed.  If you have read this far, thank you, and if you have signed this, thank you even more.  If you are someone or know someone who can make this happen please forward this on for me.  I pray that I no longer have to hear of another inmate dying because of no air conditioning.
