Every Ohioan has a constitutionally protected right to be treated equally under the law. In Ohio though, those who have committed themselves in same sex marriages performed in one of the growing number of states in which it is legal are denied that right and institutionally discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. By contrast, Ohio recognizes all marriages performed out of state for heterosexual marriages without scrutiny, including marriages of first cousins performed in states which allow such marriages, disproportionately marginalizing members of the LGBTQ community (Ohio Revised Code, 3101.01).
We, the undersigned, implore you to follow the lead of Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane and refuse to defend the unconstitutional Ohio amendment banning the recognition of legal same sex marriages performed in other states and commonwealths. With the landmark SCOTUS decision merely a month prior, it is time for Ohio to treat ALL of it's citizens equally regardless of sexual orientation and strike down the amendment to our constitution banning same sex marriage.
