Save the Ironton-Russell Bridge

Save the Ironton-Russell Bridge

Built in 1922, the Ironton-Russell bridge, which connects Ironton, OH to Russell KY is three truss cantilever including a suspended Baltimore truss span in the central span. It is the only bridge of its kind left in the United States. It was the first bridge built between Cincinnati, OH and Parkersburg, WV, which was a long distance with no bridges. It is the oldest surviving bridge of its type on the Ohio River!
Ohio Department of Transportation has targeted this bridge for destruction as soon as the replacement bridge is completed. While it carries traffic today, there are concerns about its ability to continue to carry the weight of vehicles. However, there are no safety concerns about pedestrians. This bridge can be preserved and used as a pedestrian bridge for many years to come. This wonderful example of American engineering deserves to be preserved for future generations.
