I care about building a Culture Center for the Pine Ridge Reservation because I see most of the tribal members straying from tradition. Once we lose our Language, we will no longer be a Tribe. It's important to me that my culture doesn't perish We just need to be reminded who we are and where we came from. Here's my reasons why I care about building a culture center.

  1. On December 29, 1890 My tribe was brutally killed by the United States Army. That cold day they took all our weapons that we had, then we heard a gun shot then the bullets came down. A few days later they gathered all the frozen bodies in wagons and buried them in 1 massive grave. There was about 267 men, woman, children, and old people who died so innocently with brave. Our ancestors fought and died for us.
  2. Slowly we are losing the elders that know these things and the ones that care about knowing these things.
  3. Our people lived off the land, we respect it. Now its more sacred because the ground is the blood of my ancestors. We understand that we're all connected and everything in nature has a spirit.
  4. Our approach to life there came a great freedom, an intense and absorbing respect for life, enriching faith in a Supreme Power, and principles of truth, honesty, generosity, equity, and brotherhood as a guide to mundane relations.
  5. We are contented to let things remain as the Great Spirit made them.
  6. They tried to take away our native tongue and way of life. Our ancestors fought and died for what we have.
  7. Our land is everything to us... I will tell you one of the things we remember on our land. We remember that our grandfathers paid for it-- With their lives.
  8. Take the best of the old Lakota ways- always keep them. Do not let them die.
  9. I believe that our culture has important lessons to teach the rest of the world about the interconnectedness of all living things and the simple fact that our very existence is dependent upon the natural world we are rapidly destroying.
