Officially name Turn 7 of the Miami International Autodrome as “Fake Marina”
All of the great race tracks have famous named corners. Spa-Francorchamps has Eau Rouge. Silverstone has Maggots and Becketts. Monaco has too many to list here.
The Miami International Autodrome should have some named corners as well. Specifically, it should officially name its most infamous corner, Turn 7, as “Fake Marina.”
The fake marina that the organizers of the inaugural Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix have constructed at Turn 7 has been one of the most talked about aspects of both the track itself and the entire weekend. Several of the drivers have noted the corner is blind and tricky, and one of the critical areas of the track. They have noted the great potential for overtakes as a result of how difficult this corner appears to be in the simulator, and so it is likely we’ll be seeing a lot of the fake marina during broadcasts of the race.
The organizers have appeared to embrace the buzz around this corner, but they should take this one step further and officially name Turn 7 as “Fake Marina.”
Miami has signed a 10-year deal with Formula 1, and we will continue to see this corner for several more years. Even if they do not construct a marina (real or fake) for future grands prix, the infamy of the fake marina of Turn 7 at the inaugural 2022 Miami Grand Prix will always remain. The organizers should lean into that.
