Whereas LGBTQ+ people still experience far too much physical, psychological, sexual, economic, institutional and medical violence throughout the world;
Whereas 67 countries still criminalize same-sex relations between consenting adults, and in 11 countries these relations are punishable by the death penalty;
Whereas 50 countries criminalize trans people under different laws;
Whereas Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights stipulates that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”;
Whereas lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary, queer, intersex, two-spirit and asexual people are, first and foremost, human beings, representing a significant portion of the global population;
Whereas romantic, sexual and gender diversity are integral parts of human diversity;
Whereas the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, which commemorates the removal of homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses by the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 17, 1990, has been an agent of change for several years now, and in many countries;
We, the undersigned, urgently ask the United Nations and its Member States to:
- Officially establish May 17th as the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia by adopting a resolution.
- Invite the Secretary General to take immediate action in this regard.
