Wham! to be Christmas Number One 2017

I am sure that most people will be aware that George Michael passed away last year on Christmas Day at the age of 53, due to natural causes as a result of Dilated Cardiomyopathy and Myocarditis.

Since the X Factor started in 2004, they have had the Christmas number one 7 times since then;

  • Shayne Ward with That's My Goal in 2005
  • Leona Lewis with A Moment Like This in 2006
  • Leon Jackson with When You Believe in 2007
  • Alexandra Burke with Hallelujah in 2008
  • Matt Cardle with When We Collide in 2010
  • Sam Bailey with Skyscraper in 2013
  • Ben Haenow with Something I Need in 2014

In 1984, Wham! recorded and released their song Last Christmas which reached a chart position of number two as their contender for number one, Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid beat them to the position.

Last Christmas by Wham! has never been the Christmas number one in the United Kingdom, but I feel that now is a better time than ever for the song to be this years' Christmas number one in remembrance of George Michael.

Sharon Osbourne said an interview that she backs George Michael being this years Christmas number one over the winner of X Factor 2017.

A small section of the interview can be read below and the whole interview can be read here

“Oh God yeah!” says Sharon, of the campaign to get Wham!’s Last Christmas to No.1 in the UK.

“Wouldn’t that be great? That would be amazing. It feels right. A Different Corner was one of my favourites, which was why I was so moved by Lloyd.

"My happiest memories of George are taking my daughters [Kelly and Aimee] to see him perform.

"We lost so many stars last year that you can’t replace. Do you think there’s anybody around who can replace Prince? No. And there’s nobody as an artist and songwriter that can replace George.

“For somebody of my age, that was the soundtrack to our youth. It brought back so many memories in George Week, looking up at the screens with all those great videos. You look at those people who are no longer with us and you’re like: ‘Oh s**t.’ It’s frightening.It’s just so horribly sad that he’s gone.”
