WRITTEN NOTICE TO THE MŌKAI PĀTEA WAITANGI CLAIMS TRUST (“the Trust”)
To: The Chairperson of the Trust
To: The Office of Treaty Settlements
To: The Registrar of the Waitangi Tribunal
1. We the undersigned being claimants and their hapū members in support, seek the withdrawal of the WAI 662, 1835 and 1868 claims listed in the table below from the mandate proposed by the Trust with immediate effect.
2. The reason for this withdrawal is based on our belief that the mandate by the Trust is flawed for a number of reasons in particular:
a) the Crown not acting impartially in its decision to take steps to recognise this mandate;
b) the Crown working to overturn previous mandate efforts and agreements for Ngati Hinemanu and Ngati Paki because they may require a different settlement model than that being promoted; and
c) the mandate process and outcome being inconsistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi as it undermines hapū rangatiratanga which was never ceded to the Crown.
