Prevent rape of Somali refugees—Open refugee camp extension

Dear Prime Minister Odinga,

We urge you to open Ifo 2, the Dadaab refugee camp extension. As Dadaab is well beyond its capacity to safely house more refugees, the Somalis who are fleeing war and famine in their own country are in dire need of the shelter Ifo 2 is ready to provide. As Ifo 2 has already been built and paid for, all that stands in the refugees' way now is your approval to open the extension. Opening the extension immediately not only will provide food, shelter and medical care to thousands of Somalis, it will also help prevent the rape of Somali women.

As long as Ifo 2 remains closed, Somali women will continue to live in unsecured, unprotected makeshift shelters that leave them vulnerable to rapists. Outside of the security of Dadaab, women refugees are routinely being gang-raped. Their children are being terrorized. Their lives are little better than they were in the war and famine of Somalia.

According to the International Rescue Committee, in the past two months, the number of rapes and attempted rape has doubled compared to the number of attacks reported from January to May of this year. Ifo 2 is the best chance these refugees have for survival. We urge you to open the camp to them now.
