It's been disappointing to see dance studios treated differently to schools during COVID - 19 when it comes to staged restrictions. Dance is the second most popular activity for young people in Australia after swimming, however, we cannot be found anywhere on a government restriction list. Dance studios are not a gymnasium, nor are they a place only for recreational activity. Dance schools are a safe and vital place of education for children within our community and after this second lockdown in Melbourne they should be allowed to reopen in line with academic schools.

At this stage, dance studios will be forced shut for six months of this year in Melbourne, and many will not survive. My dance studio quickly transitioned to online training prior to our initial closing in March- but the children and their teachers now want to get back into their studio. While I feel for all small businesses in Melbourne at this time, it just doesn’t seem right that you can still play golf during this lockdown. That in six week’s time you will be able go and get your nails done and bars and pubs will reopen for people to go out drinking again. But that children still won’t be allowed to attend to their dance school.

Over the years, my students have gone on to full time dance training and to work within the industry and arts training has been an integral part to their health, wellbeing, childhood development, sense of belonging and the success of their futures. Dance studio owners and arts educators of Victoria, and all who support us. We need change. This is simply not good enough for our dancers.
