We, the undersigned, hereby petition that MP David Tredinnick's position on the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee be resigned from or revoked, on the grounds of his views being diametrically opposed to scientific evidence and progress, as outlined below.
i. Mr Tredinnick is a supporter of alternative medicine, a pseudo-scientific practice which has no grounds of evidence.
ii. Mr Tredinnick has often made supportive comments in Parliament on homeopathy, despite continued lack of evidence of its effectiveness.
iii. Mr Tredinnick claimed £755 on his parliamentary expenses for astrology software, another study with no scientific grounds of evidence.
iv. Mr Tredinnick has supported chiropractic, and is known to have supportively mentioned the influence of the Moon on blood clotting.
v. Mr Tredinnick has tabled several motions in support of homeopathy's continued funding on the National Health Service. He signed the March 2007 Early Day Motion 1240 calling for the positive recognition of NHS homeopathic hospitals, as well as proposing the motions: EDM 284: BMA Annual Representative Meeting Motions on Homeopathy, EDM 285: Effect of Homeopathic Remedies on Breast Cancer Cells, EDM 286: Homeopathic Medicines in the Treatment of Moderate to Severe Depression, and EDM 287: Homeopathy and Chronic Primary Insomnia.
While alternative medicines can be psychologically effective through the placebo effect, surveys have shown that the rates of effectiveness are incredibly low. For a man who believes that ineffective medical practices are valid treatments for dangerous illnesses is wholly irresponsible and poses a severe threat to the future health of the British public and the progress of science.
- Office of the Leader of the House of Commons
I call for the resignation or removal of David Tredinnick from the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, on the grounds of his views being diametrically opposed to scientific evidence and progress.
