The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly passed the bill proposing the amendments to the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016 which will lead to more political interference in the running of universities.

The autonomy of the governor is being compromised. This will make the minister more powerful and pave the way for more and more political interference in universities and their functioning,

The bill, tabled by Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant was intended to clip the powers of the Governor and thereby empower the state government in recommending to the Governor the names of the vice chancellors posts.
