One of the contributors to the spread of Covid 19 was banned products like gutkha, khaini and zarda, as Covid-19 spreads through droplets from the mouth, infected persons who consumed these products could transfer the infection through their saliva when they spit in public places.

Though the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations, 2011 banned the use of gutkha and nicotine, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Maharashtra had banned the use of these products from time to time through orders.

14/8/2020--The Bombay high court (HC) directed the state government to file an affidavit in reply to a public interest litigation (PIL) which sought directions to constitute a special task force led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to deal with manufacturing, selling, trading of banned products including gutkha, khaini, zarda and other products which could contribute towards the spread of Covid-19. The plea seeks stringent laws to implement the ban as well as immediate action against cartels, hoarders and transporters

Eating of Smokeless tobacco not only posses threat to oneself but to others as well and during Covid-19 pandemic The health ministry issued an advisory on April 10 prohibiting smokeless tobacco and spitting in public spaces. The ICMR, too, in April issued an appeal to the public not to consume tobacco products as it increases the production of saliva followed by a strong urge to spit. But disappointingly, the sale and use is on high posing a huge risk for citizens

Strict enforcement of the ban on sale of tobacco products and spitting could bring tangible gains in reducing Covid transmission and help achieve mission to eradicate TB by 2025, also save countless lives.

The ban on smokeless tobacco can have wider collateral benefits for public health beyond the current Covid-19 crisis,
