I’ve lived all over Mumbai and I’ve never had a problem with the Azaan. I’ve been living in Ghatkopar for the past 10 years and even though we have 8 mosques in a radius of 1 km, the azaan was a part and parcel of our lives. But in the last 8 months, the noise decibels have been taken to a new high. At 5.30 in the morning, you are awakened by these men shrieking and screaming. Azaan is a call to prayer and it’s always been harmonious.
We have appealed to the Mumbai Police, sent signed letters with recordings sent from different homes but of no avail.
We are not saying ‘stop the azaan’ though even countries like Saudi Arabia have banned the use of loudspeakers. What we are saying is ‘lower the volume’. The Noise Pollution Act says that noise levels should be below 55dB during the day. These levels cross 90dB. There are senior citizens, new born babies, students, people on zoom calls - everyone of them are rudely disturbed.
We request you to take strict action in the interest of the citizens of Mumbai. Noise pollution is harmful and hearing this 5 times a day, from 8 mosques for 3 minutes each is a bit too much to endure. Not I mention that all deaths, births and other announcements are also made on the loudspeakers.
We hope we will respite and that you will ensure that we are not awakened by this shrieking at 5.30 am.
