Why this petition matters

The side exits are now alarmed and marked as emergency exit doors. As a result, students living at the end of the hallways in Mako Hall have to trek on a walk to the front of the building, which is tiring and  time consuming. All of the other residence halls have exits that are easily accessible from the ends of hallways and are not alarmed. The side exits are also clearly visible to the front office staff and can be monitored extremely easily. In addition, there are a multitude of cameras in the area providing video surveillance of the exits. These can easily be monitored by the front office staff. It is unfair for the residents of Mako Hall, at Nova Southeastern University, to have to walk all the way to the front of the building and consume excessive time solely to exit the building. Time is extremely valuable as a college student on the path for success and should not have to be used on commuting to the front exit when there are other exits to the building that can easily be monitored.
The staircase doors are currently alarmed with an extremely loud alarm that resonates into the rooms surrounding the door causing a disruption in the sleep and focus of college students. The design of the building also places two study rooms and a corner lounge area in close proximity to the alarm on each side of the building. This is a major disruption to students studying in these areas. A solution to this issue is to allow students to exit through the side doors and place a fire alarm next to the door. If a student needs to trigger an alarm to alert officials of an emergency while exiting the building from these doors, they will have the ability to do so. This will save students a plethora of time. The cases against students who walked out through these side doors in the past should also be expunged.
