Why this petition matters

Started by Nicole Rogers

On July 8, 1997 our lives were changed forever.  David and Billy George were involved in a crime that would end with their surrender.  David was immediately taken into custody.  Billy had been shot and was not able to get out of the car.  He had both hands out of the car window and was trying to tell the police he could not move.  He was shot to death by the Florida Police Department.  Upon his autopsy, he was found to have been shot through both palms of his hands and he also had been shot in the spine, which is why he could not move from the car.  Meanwhile, David, who was handcuffed and placed face down off the shoulder of the road, had to hear the shots ring out knowing his brother would be gone.

David George was a first time offender, did not cause injury to anyone, and because of a law in Florida called "hand of one, hand of all" he was charged with his brothers murder.  Because he was sentenced by a score sheet system, his charges were able to be enhanced.  David, 27 years old, never been in any trouble, was sentenced to LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE!!

Even with this sentence, David used his time to better himself in every way possible.  He received a Florida High School Diploma, a Literacy Tutor Certificate that allowed him to help others study for their GEDs. He received a Certificate in Landscape Design, graduated from the Faith and Character based program.  He became a character coach, a counselor, a co-facilitator and a main facilitator.  He has taught classes such as Uprooting Anger and Quest. In 2019, he became the first inmate with a life sentence to graduate a Vapor Wake puppy from the Canine Performance Science Program through Auburn University. He also became the first inmate to graduate from the C.P.S.P by Auburn University.  This gave him the certification to actually be recognized for his ability to train the Vapor Wake puppies and dogs.

Since his incarceration, he has developed Glaucoma.  He is on daily medications and has to be taken to an Ophthalmologist outside of prison.  He needs to have corrective surgery or he will go permanently and completely blind.  The FLDOC will not allow the surgery due to the high costs involved.  He has Asthma that has also gotten much worse.  He is on daily medications for this as well.  His compromised lung condition puts him at a high risk for contracting COVID-19 which is a huge concern considering the number of cases in Florida alone. He has been deemed legally blind and disabled.  He has served 23 yrs and only had one disciplinary write up.  He would be able to be a contributing member of society if he were to be granted a reduction in sentencing.  He has a support system of family and friends that are willing to provide for his needs.  Davids' dream is to come home to South Carolina and see his parents before they pass.  He would love to get involved in some type of dog training program and also would like to share his story with others so that they might make better choices in life and avoid the tragedy, pain and horrific conditions he has had to endure all these years.  PLEASE!!!  We, his family, beg you to sign this petition.  This could happen to one of your loved ones!!!!
