The problem is instead of addressing the issue at hand with most incarcerated individuals with Substance Abuse Disorder, they lock them up for years and expect them to come out new and improved human beings. There’s worse things going on in prison than there ever could be on the streets. Instead of repeating the cycle, change it up. It’s complete insanity! Give REPEAT(not first time) offenders with addiction disorders the chance to go to a one year program(yes we use the money saved from housing the inmates to build such places) and if they mess up after STRUCTURED TREATMENT with mental health counseling, groups, therapy, a peer recovery support specialist, then send them to prison. Giving HARSHER sentences to people that commit crimes under the influence that doesn’t involve killing someone, raping someone, causing actual bodily harm to someone, etc is out of control. People who commit rapes, child sex offenders, murderers are getting less time than individuals that have committed crimes that did not cause harm to anyone other than themselves. These are human beings, some with very horrible childhood trauma that’s not being addressed. QUIT OVERLOOKING ADDICTS AND START HELPING THEM!!
