I experienced cervical shock and had no pain relief during my coil insertion. It then had to be removed as my pulse remained at 40 and blood pressure at 80/60 for over 30 mins as I tried to bear the pain as I didn’t want it all to be for nothing. This was my second coil fitting - the first one I only experience mild discomfort!

When I had my IUD fitted at a sexual health clinic, I wasn't offered any pain relief or even warned about how painful it might be. I fainted after leaving the room and was found in a complete state about 10 minutes later, sitting alone in the waiting room unable to walk. It's not just the immediate pain itself which is bad. Now, the long-lasting psychological impact of that experience has made me very anxious during smear tests, which are absolutely vital to preventing cervical cancer, and that anxiety makes these basic procedures much more uncomfortable than they should be. I'm sure there are plenty of people who avoid smear tests because they're anxious it will be as painful as an IUD fitting, and in a way they aren't wrong, because the trauma of that unexpected, unnecessary pain generates anxiety which does genuinely make getting any kind of cervical exam more uncomfortable.

I was traumatised by how painful getting my IUD fitted was. I wasn't offered pain relief or any kind of warning beforehand what the pain might be like. I was in agony after leaving the room and was found

I'm signing because I am tired of the abuse people with female reproductive organs face in medical care. I am fucking sick and tired of doctors minimizing women and other folks. No abortions, but painful IUDs makes no fucking sense. Fuck you America. Fuck you OBGYNs. Fuck you insurance. Fuck every single one of you who have allowed women and other people to suffer while you minimized their pain. What the FUCK is WRONG with YOU???

I'm terrified to get the one I have taken out because the insertion was so painful. I would chose the copper coil again because I can't use hormonal birth control, however the pain and panic that will inevitably come with it is stopping me, leaving me with little to no non-hormonal LARC options.

I had my IUD placed in 2017 without any painkillers. They told me to take some ibuprofen before hand, which I diligently did.

The procedure to place the device was painful and almost immediately after it was placed my blood pressure dropped so severely they had nurses monitoring me to make sure it didn't drop further and said they'd have to send me to the hospital if it continued to drop. I spent an hour and a half violently vomiting and shivering until they called my emergency contact (my mother!) to come get me!

For six to eight weeks afterward, I had to take ibuprofen to lessen (I reiterate, lessen not eliminate) the pain and cramps I was experiencing as a result.

The idea that this procedure is done without any proactive anesthesia is absolutely barbaric.

No nerve endings in a cervix? That's absolute bullshit.

These devices are criminal. They are extremely painful. Don't get one. The pain was worse then stepping on a burning ember.

So many times women are told, this may cause a little mild discomfort when a procedure is performed but I've never had mild discomfort. It HURTS and it's dismissed as if I don't matter. I'm 61 and I've had time for a lot of procedures. Hate them all. It's not fair and it's not right. Offer some decent pain relief.

I have also endured the pain of a coil fitted.
