Why this petition matters

Started by Cheslyn Helmus

ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) has been at a stand still since FOREVER for raises, we the disabled people deserve more than what we’ve been given. A lot of disabled people are turning to M.A.I.D. (Medical Assistance in Dying) because we simply can’t afford to live on the little amount we receive, and can’t afford the medical devices we need to have a better quality of life. Heaven help you if you have a roommate they can try and pin as your spouse. You think you have problems now just wait until they claw your amount down to just barely being able to afford your portion of the rent. How do you expect a single Disabled person to live on $1169.00 or less a month when the average cost of living is over $2000 a month??? Ford and Trudeau seem to enjoy cutting us out of any kind of raise or help. Ford has been found in the past to have certain biases towards people on any form of assistance and as far as I’m concerned he shouldn’t be allowed to continue being in the position he’s in.

So I ask you to come together and make a difference for people who are struggling to find places to live, who are ostracized for being on ODSP when they try to get a new rental. For people who will become homeless if nothing is done. The reality is having to choose a roof over our heads and starve or choose food and be on the streets for the foreseeable future because our government doesn’t care and has shown that they don’t. No this is not a dramatization, this is life for those of us “lucky” enough to have found ourselves in the system…lucky isn’t how I’d describe it.

The goal of this petition is to make the quality of life for us better and raise a single persons amount to $2000 or more to make finding and keeping a roof over our heads a possibility in this day and age because we are also people and we deserve respect and more than the scraps we’ve been given.
