Why this petition matters

Started by Sabelo Sibiya

The 60 year old pensioner was raped by her own pastor late in 2018 at her home in Hlabisa. She reported the incident in 2022 to the police with much difficulty as the pastor is popular in the church. The old lady and her children faced  a lot of intimidation and blatant lack of support from the church and its members. The pastor himself did send a message to the old lady's son, relating how her opening the case would ruin his life and leave his children fatherless. This woman has faced a lot of difficulty, this woman is a 60 year old mother who was brutally violated and could do nothing. She faced a lot of judgement and discrimination for opening a case against a pastor of such a big church. The church is taking the pastor’s wife and him to counseling, he receives spiritual support and the family of the victim is labeled as satanists for speaking up against the pastor.  As it stands now the case was withdrawn without the court sitting and the old lady has had no justice and she still lives with the pain of what she went through. The pastor on the other hand carries on with his life. The case was withdrawn due to the fact that there was no evidence according to the prosecutor who withdrew the case. This happens without any true investigation, this case was deemed old and old lady's statement and that of the witness were deemed unsatisfactory. Her son had even submitted a message where the pastor confessed to this crime and further intimidated them yet the case was withdrawn.

The family have written a letter to the NPA and have gotten no response, they have reported this case to the Cultural Religious and Linguistic communities (CRL) Commission which was established to protect and promote CRL communities rights and have received no response since they committed to reporting this to the police themselves. This has been reported to the office of  the provincial police commissioner and still awaiting the results of that investigation.  The media was engaged in this very traumatic event, an article was produced by isolezwe and an Exposé https://youtu.be/brw9Ckd301w was published on the Solomon's temple show and published on the internet.

The family is now starting this petition at the risk of more intimidation, more hate but seeking justice for the old lady. This pastor is dangerous and influential and is used to intimidating people. The pastor is unapologetic, walking free and continues to lead the church in Hlabisa and Nongoma as if nothing happened. This is not the first time that this pastor is accused of rape. In 2016 he was arrested and charged for alleged rape of a child in the school where he was the principal at Nongoma. This is a call for this case to be reinstated to allow both parties to be heard in court. The family is speaking up and hoping more will speak up, as they do not want any more victims at the hands of a man who is seemingly a trusted leader in the KwaNongoma community. Many steps have been taken to try and ensure the old lady receives justice and they now come to you, please sign the old lady's petition, put yourself in their shoes and if this was your mother what would you do, put yourself in her shoes as an elder and a woman made vulnerable and violated by a trusted member of the community please support this petition calling for the reinstatement of the old lady's case.
