Close Oceanside Schools due to Dangerous Driving/Walking Conditions

Early February 9th, 2017, a massive snowstorm hit the Long Island area, forcing Oceanside along with many other school districts to close their doors. However, overnight conditions have severely worsened. Streets are covered in thick layers of ice, due to it having rained before the snow hit. Because of these horrible conditions, many schools have closed today as well. However, the Oceanside Schools have decided to stay open, saying that "our schools are clear and our buses are ready." While this may be the case for the immediate areas around the schools, many residential areas clearly are not prepared for a mass commute. When asked about the matter, Oceanside Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Harrington stated that the farther streets not being ready was "the Town of Hempstead's fault." When also presented with this issue, concerned residents of Hewlett began a petition to close their schools, and seeing that the Hewlett District cared about the safety of their students and teachers, the petition was a success. The people of Oceanside think it is absolutely ridiculous and dangerous for schools to be open today, and will see to it that potential accidents can be prevented by closing the schools.
