Why this petition matters

Started by Oceanside Students

Dear Mrs.Brown,

When many of my fellow students and I saw the official prom date for this year, we were disappointed to say the least.

The girls soccer team has a game that weekend, boys lacrosse has a game in North Carolina that day, and I’ve heard boys soccer has a game that weekend as well. We’ve been told from students on Student Council that students did not have a say in when prom would take place.

As students and as a school, we’ve been through a lot over the past 3 years. Those of us that are seniors, we’ve had half of our sophomore year take place on a computer screen and our Junior year was filled with zero school events and no dances besides a heavily restricted prom due to Covid. We do not understand why we do not have any say in this arguably the biggest high school event of the year. Some of us have been dreaming about senior prom since our freshman year when our older siblings graduated high school and told us the stories from one of if not the best weekends they ever had at prom. It marks the ending of the best four years of our lives, and is the perfect weekend of closure for all us Seniors.

For everything we’ve been through as a school and as a student body, we expected some type of inclusion in choosing when our prom would be. Instead, we were given a weekend that goes against at least three teams schedules, and as a school that claims to have a major focus on athletics, we fail to see how this makes sense. We feel like as a school we can do better than this. We believe there needs to be a change to a date that works for all students.

Thanks,

Oceanside Students
