Give Oberon's children fluoridation for a healthy future

Every child deserves a healthy future. And there's one simple thing that could make a huge difference to the children of Oberon: water fluoridation.

Oberon is among a handful of NSW towns without fluoridation, a successful public health measure that reduces tooth decay in people of all ages.

Dentists, doctors and other health professionals recommend water fluoridation as a safe, equitable and cost-effective way to prevent tooth decay.

Since 1994, there have been 18 international reviews of the existing research on fluoridation and general health. Not one has found that water fluoridation poses a known health risk.

Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that strengthens our teeth and helps them fight decay. Water fluoridation adjusts the levels of fluoride in tap water to give our teeth the best protection. It began in Australia 65 years ago and 89% of Australians now have fluoridated water.

But the people of Oberon are missing out. Local dental health experts say children from the Oberon area can have twice as much tooth decay as kids in nearby communities that drink fluoridated water.

Tooth decay causes pain and infection. It can lead to tooth loss, hospitalisation, and a lifetime of poor oral health – which in turn can cause other health problems.

Sadly, those with the greatest need for dental treatment are often the ones least able to access or afford it. The Oberon community has no full-time dentist, and no water fluoridation to give their teeth automatic protection from decay.

The power to SAY YES to fluoridation lies in the hands of Oberon Council, which is currently deciding whether to go ahead and fluoridate or not. The Council has called for feedback by June 14.
