In response to COVID-19, Oakland University, like many other institutions, devised a plan to address the pandemic in regards to their residential communities. While implementing many important regulations, such as wearing masks and socially distancing in all public spaces, University Housing's visitor policy creates inherent contradictions in how the university plans to keep students safe.

The new visitor policy goes as follows:

“Visitors” are defined as Oakland University residents who visit or stay in a room outside of their own assigned room and/or building. Visitors will not be permitted in bedrooms, suites, or apartments during the forthcoming academic year. Visitors may, however, be entertained in public lounges.

This policy accomplishes little, if anything, in the way of protecting students from becoming infected with COVID-19. Residents from different rooms and residence halls can eat with each other in the dining halls (masks off), be together outside (masks off), and meet in any public space; however, residents are barred from entering each other’s rooms. The visitor policy does nothing to keep residents safe as it becomes obsolete since residents are able to interact and be physically close with each other in many other ways outside of their assigned spaces in residence halls. The only thing the visitor policy accomplishes is taking away privacy from residents who wish to be around their peers in a more private setting.

In a time when isolation and mental health are a real obstacle to living in a pandemic, this visitor policy exacerbates those struggles by not allowing residents to meet with their peers in a private setting. Since residents can interact with anyone they want in any way in other spaces, this visitor policy does not function in a way to promote a healthy and happy living environment for the residential communities of OU.

Given how the visitor policy takes privacy away from residents while offering no real protection from COVID-19, the visitor policy should be rescinded by Oakland University Housing.
